• So I left for Dumaguete after 3 days on Malapascua Island.  I left around 9am and got back to Cebu city at around 2:30pm.  I was actually gonna stay in Cebu for that night and hang out with a friend.  But then I realized I could actually catch the boat for Dumaguete.  If you’re reading this, sorry 猪婆.  By the time I got to Dumaguete, it was 9pm because of the delay.  These tricycle guys at the dock were haunting me and asking if I wanted a ride.  There’s this one tricycle guy who was trying to rip me off for 600php to get to Dauin then dropped to 350php in 3 minutes.  He said the trip takes an hour.  I read it online before that some girl did it for that price and for that long to get to Mike’s Resort.  So I knew I could at least get that price.  Then there’s another tricycle guy who said he’d take me for 250php and I’ll get there in half an hour.  As soon as he gave me that offer, the other guy started arguing with him in Filipino. That was actually the first time I’ve seen the competition among Filipino people. Before then, I’ve never seen anyone who would drop down the price because there are so many competitions.  The price is the same no matter how many people you talked to.  Filipino people are pretty tight in that regard.  Not sure what that guy said but obviously he wasn’t happy.  I was iffy about it so I called Mike.  Mike told me it takes about 300p and 30min to get to Dauin.  So I went with that guy for 250p.  Thankfully, I was able to find someone who was kind enough to make that phone call for me.  Those tricycle guys took me to a booth where they have a landline but the guys in there told me they couldn’t call a cellphone number from a landline…but I only had Mike’s cell.  So I asked them if they could call from their cellphone and I would pay for it.  This lady in the office made the call for me.  (not getting a SIM card at the airport was a big mistake!  That was my only chance to get one.)  I asked her how much I owed her, and she was like “don’t worry about it”.  So I gave her a hug and thanked her for being so generous.  I know a call doesn’t really cost much but it seems like most people don’t wanna do it for some reason.  Maybe I’m foreign. Maybe they’re poor. I don’t know. But people won’t even bother responding where I come from and these filipinos did seem like they wanted to help so I would say it’s probably because they’re poor.

I asked the tricycle guy to pull over so I can pull out money from an ATM and get food at McDonalds.  They have this spaghetti and a coke for only 50php, which is less than 10rmb.  That’s dirt cheap!

So I got to Mike’s Resort in about 30mins.  I found it through other Chinese divers online and I told Mike that I was coming.  He booked a room for me at the place next to their resort.  But they didn’t have a room for me cuz I got there one day earlier.  So Mike let me stay at one of their 2500php room for only 1000php, only for that night though.

The room itself was really nice.  The only thing is that the pillows kinda suck, but I was too tired to care.

If there is a fear that I need to get over with.  Pets would be it.  Cats and dogs.

The cottage next to Mike's Resort.  Forgot the name.  950php/night, fan room with hot shower.  There's a fridge.  They bring you hot water every morning so you can make coffee if you want.  There's a kitchen that you can use in the house in the first pic.  The market is like 20min walk though.  Not much in the market either.

Diving in Dumaguete was way better than that in Malapascua.  It really reminds me of Puerto Galera because many fish I saw there I saw them here too.  Dumaguete city is in Oriental Negros province. (How racist is that!) Dauin is like 30min ride from Dumaguete City.  Apo Island is another 30min boat ride from Dauin.  I dove two days in Dauin and two days in Apo island.  They’re really different.  There're divers that I met who dove in many world class dive sites and thought the corals on Apo were one of the best they’ve ever seen.  But there aren’t that many fish on Apo.  Dauin is the other around.  So it depends on what kind of diving you enjoy more.   I personally thought the drift dives we had were memorable because they were new to me.  The currents were so fast that I felt like I was riding a motorbike underwater.  I think riding a DPV is probably similar except that it’s safer? I’m curious to find out one day. :) Me and the girl from Shanghai weren’t sure if we were ready for Coconut Point because of the unpredictable currents it’s famous for.  But after a few days of diving with the guys, the DM thinks we could handle it so here we go.  The currents weren’t as bad as we thought it would be.  And I was glad that I was able to spot a few scorpionfish and a stingray. There was a jack fish swimming towards me like it’s about to attack, then it made a turn to attack a large school of small fish near by.  The fish school keeps warily away from the jack.  The jack missed after a few attempts.  It kinda seemed like the fish school was messing with the jack. Hehe… I was so excited when I saw that happen.  Tried to point it out to the girl from Shanghai but she didn't see it.  We also saw this huge big brown-marbled grouper yawning…well I thought it was letting other small fish to clean him but the dive guide said it was yawning cuz he didn't think there were any cleaner around.  me shrugs*  There’s this dive site called Mainit in Dauin.  Mainit means hot in local language.  The sand underwater was warm because there’s a volcano.  We could see lava flows running out of the sand.  It was nice to have cuz the diving was a little bit cold.

I finally broke half hundred logs!  My buoyancy control is definitely getting better. : ) I honestly need to get my own BC and fins though, especially BC.  They have this minor leaking on the inflator hose.  They told me not to worry.  I kept an eye on it.  Nothing happened.  But it's always better to use your own equipment so you dont have to deal with this kind of BS.

    Apo Island

lady selling t-shirts on Apo Island

the people I met in Dumaguete

I dont know why I see this thing on every trip.

I have to have this drink everywhere.  AMF is da bomb.

I finally found out why those filippinos called me Sunshine back on Bohol.  The guys working at Mike's were talking about how I look like Sunshine.  So I asked them to look it up online and we found out it's the chick from the Taiwanese TV show Meteor Garden流星花园.  I was kinda disappointed cuz I was hoping it was something cool like...a pornstar?  Or it's because of my personality?  I love being called Sunshine so whatever. :)

They have this Malatapay Market thing going on once a week in Dumaguete city.  It’s about 30min drive from Mike’s if I remember it right.  So we went check it out in the morning before diving.  It’s kinda like what we have in China except that we don’t sell tobacco out in the open.  And you see these crazy people walking with pigs, cows, lambs and horses.  I don’t know if they’re selling them alive or what.  That was eye-opening for me.

The beach on Dauin wasnt as bad as everybody said.  It is black but it doesn't have to be a white sand beach.  I personally think it's nice to walk on.  And it's sparkling in the sun.

The chick from Shanghai is a solo diver like me.  She's been to Similan and Sipadan before, which I found out arent as expensive as I always thought.  Guess where I'm going next! :D

On the last day,  Mike's son Keith took me to the mountain to see the hot spring.  It was pretty nice.  Bigger than I thought it would be.  They didnt sell tickets at the entrance but they do ask you for a donation.  It makes sense cuz they have rails all around the mountain and the pools.

    some dude on the mountain

And now, the bikini hottie as you all have been waiting for...

    Not bad huh?

Seriously, people are not that open in this country.  I was heading to the market the other morning.  The local guys at Mike's offered me a ride but I really just wanted to walk since it's only 15 minutes away.  Didn't really want to waste their gas anyway.  But a few minutes later,  Keith caught up with me on a bike and told me those guys kept telling him to give me a ride.  He's foreign to this country like me.  We didn't know what was going on.   Keith figured I might run into some trouble on the way so I hopped on.  Next thing I know, everybody looked at me weird at the market cuz I was wearing a bikini and a t-shirt.  Big deal.  I wasn't thinking because it's not really a muslim country and I thought Philippines had lotsa western influence.

    Road to the market..

I felt like I was in a downward spiral throughout the whole trip.  It mostly happened when I was alone cuz that’s usually when I got to think.  I consider myself positive, relatively.  At least I have been trying to deal with everything going on in my life as positive as I could.  I know everyone has their bad days.  Stop whining.  Suck it up, Faith.  It would be easier to suck it up if there were something you can do.  I’m not a cynic.  My life doesn’t suck.  Everything I want I go for it.  I’m pretty happy with myself.  There're just things that I wish I didn't have to deal with and there's absolutely nothing I can do to change that.  I try not to think about them as much cuz why worry if it’s something you cant change?  The only thing I could do is either run away from them or wait for them to change.  Either way.  It’s not something I would consider positive.  That’s not me.  I wanna take control of my life.  But there is honestly nothing else I can do.  I'm happy that all of the people I met think I’m bubbly and full of energy.  At least, I haven't let those things affect my life.  At some point, I came to realize that I’ve always tried to be that strong independent girl who doesn’t need anyone, and that probably made people who I do care about feel less important.  It's just my pride.

  • This is my third visit to the Philippines within the past 12 months.  I wouldn’t call this a spiritual trip but I did find a bit more about myself.

This time, I didn’t really have /a plan/ for a change.  I usually do because I worry a lot and I like to have plans so I’d know what to expect.  Being the third time in the Philippines, I sorta want something unpredictable.

    North Bus Terminal, Cebu City

Maya Pier, about an hour away from Malapascua Island

I literally spent 15 hours to get to this island called Malapascua.  Legend has it that it’s called so because the Spanish people first landed here in a storm on Christmas day.  Well at least that’s what Mr. Google told me.  Malapascua actually means bad Easter in Spanish so I don’t know what’s the dealio here.  Ironically, Christmas is the best time of the year for seeing thresher sharks.  It only takes about 3 hours to walk around the island but I never ended up doing it.

    Bounty Beach, Malapascua Island

Right when I jumped off the boat, there’re a few local people who offer to help carry my luggage.  This happened a lot when I was in the Philippines.  Most of them want your money.  Some simply want to help.  I always turn them down politely because I don’t want strangers to touch my sh*t and I don’t wanna pay for something I’m capable of doing.  However this guy gave me the WTF face and told me how he’s not a gangster and he just wants to help me out.  I kept smiling and told him I’m a big girl I can handle it myself.  He kept walking with me trying to help me get a place to stay.  I ditched him for this group of Hong Kong people that I bumped into.  They’re nice enough to ask me to join them for lunch and even diving.  They’re a group of 20+ people so they couldn’t have the diving schedule settled soon, and they planned to stay on the island for a couple days unlike me, who only have 2 days for diving.  As soon as I walked back to the beach, I saw the Filipino guy again.  He kept walking with me until I decided to stay at Exotic.  One thing that’s never gonna happen in China is that you can actually leave your luggage in any dive shop while you check out others.  Even if you don’t end up staying with them, they’re okay with that.  The trust among people in the Philippines makes me feel like an ahole for being so cautious sometimes.

So I did my homework on thresher sharks, hoping when I get to see one I would recognize it.  After 9 dives on Malapascua (I did one on the first day when I got on the island, then 4 dives a day, 2 days in a row), I didn’t see any thresher shark.  Diving in one of the few places in the world where threshers are spotted on a regular basis, you would think you’d at least get to see one.  But nada! I stayed down there for almost an hour each dive, freezing, and saw literally more divers than fish.  The other group of divers saw 5 threshers at another dive site on the same day.  If that doesn’t make you feel better, the last day when I didn’t dive, “Oh we saw them!  A hammerhead too! ” FML.

That's the guy I didn't get to see!

Even though I didn’t see threshers, mantas or the legendary hammerheads, I still saw some cool stuff that I’d never seen before on other dives.  Saw mandarin fish too.  Nope, didn’t mate.  Story of my life. ;)

     Diving in Gato Island

My room at Exotic.  650peso/night, fan room with shared bathroom.  There's an A/C in that room but I knew I didn't even need the fan so didn't bother asking for the price.   The whole building was really clean and I never bumped into anyone else when I used the bathroom.  Cold shower wasn't an issue for me either.   Of all the dive shops I stayed with, I like this room the best because the bed and the pillow are the most comfortable ones.  Even the pillow at the 2500peso/night room was nothing compared to this.   Exotic offers DM students 5000peso a month for a room like this.  It's such a good deal that I'm considering taking my DM course there just for the comfort.  And it comes with free breakfast too! (not sure if it's the same with DM students)

I chose here cuz it's Exotic like me! Giggdy. XD

The best thing about going on a dive trip is not the diving itself but the people you get to meet. You make more friends when you’re traveling alone.  I met so many great people when I was at Exotic; the guys from another Hong Kong group who massaged my leg after my little accident on the boat, the fun French Canadian couple (I still don’t understand why people think French Canadians are hardcore), the cute sisters from Hong Kong (there were so many people from Hong Kong went to that island that I felt like I never left China), the Canadian guy who spent a year in China and didn’t believe I studied English by myself, and the Exotic crew who provided great service.  I had such a blast that I felt a little sad leaving.  If I ever go back to Malapascua, I would choose Exotic again and make sure I stay long enough to see threshers.

    Logon Beach, Malapascua

  • For the first time in my life, I saw seahorses ALIVE when I was diving in Puerto Galera. Yes, seahorses are used in traditional Chinese herbology. And No, I don’t understand why. In fact, there’s a lot about Chinese medicine that I don’t understand. I think it’s just a marketing strategy. Lots of people believe shark’s fin actually does you good because the media told them so, so they buy it and eat it. Seahorses have been endangered due to overfishing and habitat destruction. I honestly don’t understand why people eat them. If I’m hungry, I don’t wanna eat 500 of those to fill my stomach. Why do people believe that eating them will actually make them healthier? Had they actually seen the result? It bothers me even more when people don’t even care to drink enough water or do any sport. Talk about health!

One thing I like about seahorses is that the male carries the offspring to term. : ) As the female releases her eggs, her body slims while his swells.  It’s not as great as it sounds.  Making eggs is A LOT of work to the female seahorse, since she loses 1/3 of her body weight.  Hmm…sounds like a fair game.

    star...box!

Beautiful!
